Town Transportation

Either by land, sea or air, Vancouver s transportation is one of the most service-oriented industries. A rapid transit system remained the major transportation along Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD). The rapid transit is supervised and managed by the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (GVTA), also known as TransLink.

Translink is responsible for all aspects of municipal transportation, either by land or sea within the GVRD area. Bus transport is common throughout GVRD. Also available is SeaBus, a bicycle ferry and a foot passenger service that crosses Burrard Inlet to North Vancouver . Another is a two-line automated metro system known as SkyTrain, reputed to be the world's longest automated light rapid transit system that links downtown to the suburbs of Burnaby, New Westminster, and Surrey.

The SkyTrain is an Advanced Rapid Transit system that operates fully automated trains on two lines. Originally built to serve for the Expo 86 World's Fair, it has since then become the world's longest automated light rapid transit system utilizing the SkyBridge, the world's longest transit-only bridge.

What is also interesting is the under construction underground/elevated SkyTrain line from downtown Vancouver toward Richmond and off to the Vancouver International Airport. This project is expected to be completed by 2010. Another one which is also scheduled to be completed on the same year is the light rail transit to Coquitlam and Port Moody (now officially known as the "Evergreen" Line).

Another rail train, the West Coast Express, a commuter rail train is serving Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and Mission. Ticketing system of these services are integrated thus making public transport inexpensive and efficient. Along with this, there are leisure-oriented passenger ferry services operated by private companies around False Creek. There is also a passenger-only fast-ferry service from Vancouver harbor to Nanaimo harbor on Vancouver Island, provided by HarbourLynx.
The handicaps can also take on any bus service throughout the region. These buses are wheelchair friendly which could serve a large number of carry bike racks. Meaning, it is able to carry two wheelchairs and bicycles respectively. Buses which operate from overhead electrical trolley wires do not carry bicycle racks. Vancouver is among the last of a few cities in North America which still have trolley buses, an electric bus that does not run on tracks and is powered by electricity from an overhead wire. These buses operate on their own streets. There is a regular bus services in Greater Vancouver within the City of Vancouver which rangers two to three trips a day to Maple Ridge and Aldergrove .

For bikers, an extensive network of bike paths that provide east/west and north/south routes from one end of the city to the other is also present. Major bike paths have signal control allowing cyclists easy crossing of major arterial roads. There are also traffic calming routes on bike paths as a measure to slow down bikers to secure pedestrians and control noise and local air pollution. Foremost of these measures are traffic circles. The local government encourages the public to plant and care for trees around the circles and boulevards to provide comfortable mood along bike routes. An example of this is the Stanley Park seawall, a popular recreational bicycle route in Greater Vancouver .
Local laws were approved and passed to protect Vancouver from indiscriminate spread of urban freeways. In fact, the only freeway within the city limits is Highway 1, which passes through the eastern edge of the city. Other limited-access routes entering the city such as Highway 99, Knight Street, Grant MacConachie Way and the Lions' Gate Bridge , cease being freeways once they enter Vancouver 's city limits.

Vancouver s airport, the Vancouver International Airport, located on Sea Island in the City of Richmond, is the second busiest international airports on the West Coast of North America. The airport is served by international airlines with nonstop destinations.

The Vancouver International Airport won the ‘Best North American Airport’. And it does not flaunt such an award without reason for it offers daily flight to exotic destination all over Europe. Visiting Madrid for a rocking nightlife event is sure an easy task. And comfortable and cheap vuelos Madrid Milan is also available to tourist who would like to take a bite of Milan’s culture, architecture and history.
