Arbutus Ridge |
 |
Arbutus Ridge was once a swampy area with upland surroundings known as Asthma Flats. There is no record of early settlement in the area, although there were indications that the first settlers fished on its abundant streams.
The community was then part of its adjacent areas of Dunbar, Kerrisdale and Shaughnessy until the Canadian Pacific Railways (CPR) developed the railroad system in the area in the year 1888. During that time, the province turned over 2,100 hectares of land to the CPR which then included sizeable portions of what is now known as Arbutus Ridge . But through the years, Arbutus Ridge had been part of South Vancouver until 1908, then Point Grey , and finally that of Vancouver in 1929.

Between 1912 and 1930s, Arbutus Ridge then saw rapid development, particularly an upland residential homes for middle class community known as Mackenzie Heights . The crossroads of East / West Boulevard and Wison Avenue (now 41 st Avenue) became the central hub of political activity in Arbutus Ridge in those years. It was inevitable since the B.C. Electric s interurban railway line cut across Kerrisdale , with stops at 37 th East Boulevard and 41 st East Boulevard, which set off economic activity in the area.
However, in July 1952, the railway was replaced with trolley buses. Yet, during the past 10 years, from 1940 to the 1950s, most of the swampy area of Arbutus Ridge was filled with sands from False Creek . Houses, schools, shops and important buildings were then erected in these areas until a major development occurred in the 1960s. During this period, villages and housing subdivision were developed along with the construction of a shopping complex that made Arbutus Ridge had its own identity as a community.
Today, Arbutus Ridge had left some historical relics that tend to assail its significant role that helped shaped the development of Vancouver as a premier port capital of British Columbia . Among these were several old houses on 37 th Avenue which were built in English Arts and Crafts Style by G. L. Thornton Sharp in 1912.
It is noteworthy that Sharp s architectural genius had characterized Vancouver s identity in the first half of this century.
Arbutus Ridge is a town in Vancouver with an area of 369 hectares. Its population is 14,515 on a 2001 census. Average household income $88,940 while average income for a family is $105,942.
