Hastings - Sunrise

The making of Hastings - Sunrise was planned ahead of its time. In 1863, Vancouver s provincial government set aside half of a block on its northern section. The government thought of creating a town along the shores in what they considered as one of the finest harbors on the West Coast.
Initially, they called the place New Brighton . It became a popular weekend retreat for residents of New Westminster . Five years later, in 1868, Brighton became a place for vacationers, loggers and mill workers who made the place a starting point to visit Burrard Inlet, Moodville and Stamp s Mill . This triangular route became the regular itinerary of vacationers who traveled 16 kilometers from New Westminster to Brighton on holidays.

In 1869, New Brighton s name was changed to Hastings (officially the Hastings Townsite) to commemorate a visit to the area by Admiral George Fowler Hastings .
Hastings tag as a vacation resort may have greater impact on its rapid growth at the start of 1911.The town had laid claim to almost all the first in Vancouver : first in hotel, first in post office, first in road, first in real estate, first in communication, first subdivision and the is said to be the first ferry between Burrard Inlet and Victoria.
