Mount Pleasant |
 |
One of Vancouver s fashionable uptowns, Mt. Pleasant is located high above False Creek. It got its name in 1888 from the birthplace of the wife of H.V. Edmonds who originally owned much of Mt. Pleasant.
In 1904, Mt. Pleasant gradually emerged as an industrial city with the establishment of two slaughter houses, a tannery and a train station. With the emerging of these industrial firms, residential development also followed in the area. By 1912, the Lee Building, Vancouver s first skyscraper was constructed in Mt. Pleasant along with schools, fire hall and first run theatre. By then, Mt. Pleasant has become the stop over for the town s streetcar network.

In 1930, Mt. Pleasant had already established its reputation as a thriving industrial center. It gradually demolished its stamp as a residential district following construction of two large railway terminals and rail yards. The city hall was also constructed at 12 th Avenue and Cambie Street sometime in the 1930s.
As a result of the demolition of residential houses, many homes of historical values were lost. But some significant houses built in the 1890s and 1920s were recently restored.
