Renfrew-Collingwood |
 |
Inhabited mostly by wildlife in the 1800s, Renfrew s development was spurred by the construction of inter-urban railway in the area in 1891. The introduction of the railway definitely brought new settlers to the area.
However, the first non-native settler in Renfrew, George Wales in 1878, developed 89.4-hectare land lately bounded by Wales Street, Kingsway and 45 th Avenue. Today, Wales Street was the place where the George Wales family once lived.
The name Collingwood which is attached to Renfrew basically were the place where most workers of the Tramway Company came from in Collingwood, Ontario. Until now, the place is still closely referred to its neighboring town, Renfrew. Thus, talking about Renfrew would also mean Collingwood and vice versa.
Basically, an agricultural town, the area gradually changed its image into a residential suburb with the development of streetcar system and the inter-urban tram.

However, the interurban tram was closed in 1954. But its closure did not send the town to oblivion. In 1986, a Sky Train route was constructed in the municipality, once more, stimulating new phase of development which saw the rise of high rise apartments near station stops, a reminiscent of the interurban years.
To this day, a lot of historic buildings had been preserved in the area as a tribute of the town s growth more than a hundred years ago. Carleton Elementary School, at the southwest corner of Kingsway and Joyce, constructed in 1896 is said to be one of the oldest and had the reputation to be then the heart and soul of Collingwood.
