Strathcona |
 |
Basically, a place of racial mix-up, Strathcona was a neighborhood around the Hastings Mill and on toward the southward from Burrard Inlet.
Most of the residents here were immigrants from Scandinavia, Japan, Russia, Croatia, British Kingdom, Greeks and Chinese.
In the 1950s, local planners had earmarked the district for a massive identical housing units and townhouses. Along with this was the proposed destruction of Gastown and Chinatown to pursue plans for an inner city freeway. The plan was opposed by local residents who argued for the retention of the area s electric mix housing.
In 1968, the federal government was, however, convinced to support the $5 million rehabilitation project that include street repairs, homes and the creation of parks in the area.
