Sunset

Considered one of the earliest communities in Vancouver , Sunset is located in South Vancouver area. A year after it received its name on April 13, 1892, South Vancouver was officially incorporated.

As an original village in South Vancouver , Sunset grew up around the south ends of Main and Fraser Streets. A number of district offices were also established in the village until South Vancouver joined with the City of Vancouver in 1929.

The introduction of B.C. Electric Railway s one track streetcar line down Fraser Street to Sunset Village s south slope had pushed population growth and economic activity in the area. Thus, from a handful population of 500 in 1893, the population grew close to 5,000 in 1909. Two years later, in 1911, the Sunset experienced phenomenal population growth registering some 15,000 people in so short a period.

The population boom between the years 1909 and 1911 was primarily due to the area s industrialization and housing development. But, throughout the 1920s, development in Sunset and the rest of South Vancouver were more restraint. However, the area s agricultural lands were converted into housing districts for returning veterans at the end of WWII. New schools and community centers were also built during the period.
